Just a few kilometers from the Hotel Residence Villa GiuliaPorto Azzurro is a delightful and picturesque town, full of small alleyways and stone houses reflected in the water in the port. Part of the Gulf of Mola, ancient Tyrrhenian trade port, visit the Madonna of Monferrato Sanctuary and San Giacomo fortress, seventeenth century Spanish stronghold, where you can purchase delightful craft souvenirs.

Capoliveri overlooks the sea from a small hill, with Porto Azzurro on one side and the Stella Gulf on the other. The central square is surrounded by interlacing streets, underpasses and stairways, what’s left of the ancient Medieval town. Legend has it that here, in theChurch of St. Michael, Pope Gregory XI said mass after having escaped a furious storm at sea. Also worth a visit is the Madonna delle Grazie Sanctuary which houses a painting from the Raffaello school.

The latter, intended as a country home, along with the Demidoff Museum, still house the rooms, Egyptian hall and items tied to the French emperor. Portoferraio also gives you the chance to supplement your vacation with fitness, stopping off at the Terme di San Giovanni spa.

If you head South from the Capoliveri promontory you’ll discover a coast full of marvellous beaches like the one in Lacona, protected by its gulf. A long sandy beach protected from wind and urbanization since part of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park. At sea, the rocky sea bed, crystal clear waters and large variety of fish make for great diving.

Not far off, Barabarca is nestled in a small bay in front of a lush coast making it one of the most popular destinations for environmentally friendly tourist. Nearby, Margidore stands out for its wide and dark pebble beach, less popular but equipped with a water sports dock. From the Pareti coves you can see Corsica in the distance. Getting there is simple, thanks to the mini-bus leaving Capoliveri.

Further down you reach the famous Cala dell’Innamorata, a dark sandy beach where the town’s legend is reenacted every year: two Capoliveri lovers separated by pirates. Facing the beach, the nearbyGemini islands whose sea depths host a prosperous marine fauna. A short walk lead you to the concealed Punta della Ciarpa coves.

Continuing South you’ll hit a path that climbs Mount Calamita, the ancient iron mine area. From here you can see some sea inlets that can only be reached by boat or canoe: Punta Rossa, Ginepro, Miniera di Calamita, are wild beaches inhabited by seagulls and kingfishers like the European Shag, difficult to reach but uncontaminated and fascinating. Visit them!

If you love excursions, don’t miss out on a trip to Lake Terranera, great for the kids. From Porto Azzurro, head North and take one of the roads that leads to the sea,. Crossing the path in the fields you’ll find an amazing black sand beach where you can glimpse the emerald greenwaters reflected in a thousand colors by the sun. Spectacular!

Elba island can be easily reached by ferry departing Piombino Marittima (LI). In high season, ferries depart every half hour. The trip to Portoferraio lasts about 50 minutes. Reservations are recommended in the summer.

From Portoferraio, the Hotel Residence Villa Giulia is 8 km away. Take one of the buses to Lido di Caopliveri which stop just 50 m from our hotel.

By car
From Portoferraio, follow provincial road SP26 towards Porto Azzurro/Capoliveri for 8 km. At the fork, stay to your left following the signs for the Hotel Residence Villa Giulia.

By plane
La Pila airport is 25 km away. Take a taxi or shuttle to the Hotel Residence Villa Giulia.
